In The Elements

Nature can be harsh. For most of human history, survival meant learning how to endure it. Yet for some, these same forces are not something to hide from, but something to seek out and embrace.

This project follows people month by month who, despite the potential discomfort, choose to turn the elements into their playground. Runners, swimmers, riders and explorers — each finding their own way of moving through the world, shaped by weather, terrain and season.

One year. One focus each month. Always outside.

Winter Resolve

January

The days are short, the cold is at its harshest, and despite New Year’s resolutions, choosing to move at this time of year is never easy. Yet for some, this winter effort is the condition of excelling come spring. There is no way around it.

This chapter follows runners and open water swimmers who continue through winter — not for medals or attention, but for the simple act of showing up. Against frost, wind, and icy water, they choose consistency over comfort, proving that perseverance is its own reward.
